Fly Fishers Swarm to April Program on Bugs

Rick Hafele’s program on the "Anatomy of a Trout Steam" provided GRTU members at the April meeting authoritative information on where fish live in streams, why trout use different water types, and the angling tactics best suited for different types of water.

Nearly 30 members attended Rick’s special streamside clinic on the entomology important to successful trout fishing and hatches specific to the Guadalupe River. The clinic was made possible by your participation. I hope you soaked up every detail and found the information useful in your quest for the Guadalupe Trout!

For those who couldn’t attend, much of Rick’s expertise is available in The Complete Book of Western Hatches and Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations, which he co-authored, and his video, Anatomy of a Trout Stream.

Hal Sanders of Austin won the raffle rod, an L.L. Bean 9' 6 wt. rod donated by Eric Bataille. A truckload of door prize goodies were awarded to several lucky GRTU members at the April general meeting: Lowell Estep won a tackle bag donated by Hill Country Outfitters of San Antonio; Don Pendergraft won a Thomas & Thomas t-shirt donated by Austin Outfitters; Stephen Hoover won a copy of "How to Fly Fish the Texas Hill Country" donated by Ray Chapa; Mike Scott won an"Orvis Fly Fishing Guide" donated by Orvis Austin; Bob Tuttle won a "Guadalupana" print donated by the fly’s creator, Ray Chapa; Brian Simes won a fly fishing themed Derry Berry print donated by Orvis Austin; Ron McAlpin won a dozen white bass flies tied and donated by Billy Trimble; and Jim Roberts took home the "Complete Book Of Western Hatches" autographed by authors Dave Hughes and Rick Hafele and donated by Gruene Outfitters. Lowell Estep made the winning bid in the silent auction for the Redington Kid.Start Outfit donated by Austin Outfitters.
