GRTU Will Host Kid Fish in

New Braunfels in February

Once again we need volunteers to help teach kids 10 to 17 years of age how to cast.

This year’s Kid Fish will be February 3 and 10, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on both days. The location is Landa Park on the Comal River in New Braunfels. We will have the north side of the spring-fed pool for instructions and exclusive use of the entire pool until 10 a.m., when the general public will be allowed in.

There is no charge to kids, and no equipment necessary to attend this event. Bring your children and/or grandchildren if they fit this age group.

Being an expert caster is not a prerequisite, we just need a helpful attitude to teach these kids. GRTU has hosted this event for several years and generally gets great local exposure. A sign-up sheet will be at the January meeting. We have also traditionally given an entry-level fly rod and reel as a door prize to one of the girls or boys who attend.

The New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Dept. stocks the pool with trout and catfish on each Thursday for the event, and there are always a lot of trout caught. During the Kid Fish instruction, it will be catch and release, as a way of teaching good stewardship to the kids as well as teaching them how to cast. After 11 a.m. anyone is welcome to pay a small fee and take some trout or catfish home.

We also need some donated flies, either store bought or hand tied, for the kids to use, in addition to those we have left from last year. Black wooly buggers and such will do the job.
