Southfork of Snake River: Fly Pattern Search
Has anyone fished the Southfork of the Snake River? I am going up their Sept 15th...looks like due to the high runoff the hatches are running 5 to 6 weeks behind. I talked to Orvis in Jackson Hole an looks like during that time PMD's and Mahogany's will be hatching..possibly a few Golden Stones.
Does anyone have any patterns they can share or recipes...the color can vary from olive to tan on the PMD's and not sure what color to tie...also does anyone have the recipe for a Dornan Water Walker Golden Stone #6-#8.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Southfork of Snake River: Fly Pattern Search
I just got back after two weeks. The water is still high but we had pretty good luck.
I tied up a whole slew of things here's what worked.
Successful flys were:
Tara X
Willy's Red Annt
Yellow Double Humpy (with or without rubber legs)
Yellow Chernobly Ant
Stimulators
PMD Comparadun
CDC Rusty Spinner
Club Sandwich
Black Wolly Buggers
Black Wolly Buggers with purple ice dubbing
Yellow Salley with red butt
Cadis emerger with sparkle gold dubbing and peacock wings
JJ Special
Double up on hackle to help keep top flys afloat on the quick water.
Nymph rigs were best with the weight on the bottom, two knots on the leader 12 inches apart and then overhand knotted tags for each fly. Get to the bottom quick.
I found that on the Snake and tributaries yellow top water flies, any stonefly imitation, and JJ Special streamers and wolly buggers were great.
I'd highly recommend "Snake River Fly Fishing, Through the Eyes of an Angler" by Boots Allen. Lots of information, access points and fly suggestions.
Enjoy.

All my guide used were narrow grasshoppers and madame X variants. Yellow was a constant color in the flies, and purple accents were also leveraged. I did notice narrow grasshoppers, with yellow, buzzing around.
My wife was using spinning gear on the boat and killed it. I wanted to put the sinking line on, but stayed the course.
By the time you are out there the water should be perfect on the Snake, still a little high and fast.
I hit the Gros Ventre, which was beautiful, the next day. Found a pool and landed a rainbow and cutthroat on an olive wooly bugger, size 10. Also got boxed out of my access point for 45 minutes by a moose and her calf.
Enjoy!

I know you're going this week. If you get a chance, there's a bunch of great water near the South Fork. Here's some pics to help pump you up the rest of the week.
Tin Cup Creek-Near Tin Cup, ID

Gray's Creek-Near Alpine, WY (dirt road follows river)

Little Gray's Creek-Near Alpine, WY (after junction go at least past the two cattle gates-find a place and enjoy)
