River Cleanup July 8th - Call for volunteers

Post by LabRat » Wed Jun 14, 2017 8:05 pm

All - we are planning a river clean up July 8th and need volunteers to assist. This is our first dedicated clean up (we do some trash pickups at stockings) in many years, so please come out, bring family and friends and spend a couple hours improving our river.

WORD and IFFF are also participating with this event

We will be meeting at Rio Raft, northwest corner of the property

Schedule:
9:00 - Arrive at Rio Raft, sign in
9:30 – Safety briefing, receive assigned river location and head out with your team to begin clean up
11:00 – 11:30 – Arrive back at Rio with your filled trash bags for a cookout provided by GRTU
12:30 – Done! Enjoy the rest of the day on the river

What to bring:
Please wear GRTU logo t-shirts, hats, etc. if you have them.
Gloves
Water shoes or wading boots
Wading staff (if desired)
Sunscreen
Hat
Sunglasses
Waterproof camera (if desired)
Your awesome enthusiasm!

If you are a GRTU member you will be receiving an email shortly with the same information. You can reply to that email or here on the forum if you interested. We need a count to make sure we have enough food

Come out, meet a new fishing buddy, introduce your families, friends and neighbors to the river and have fun!

Responses for volunteers have been slow..and I realize this is the slow season for the forum, but perhaps this will entice some more volunteers out of the woodwork:

Sightline Provisions just gave 5 more reasons to volunteer for the Guadalupe River Clean Up Event on July 8.
All volunteers attending at the GRTU event will be entered to win 1 of 5 different Sightline Provisions fly fishing bracelets. Event details at grtu.org/river-clean-up-july8th/ and check out sightlineprovisions.com.
Big thanks to Edgar Diaz at Sightline.

Thanks to everyone who attended. We had 78 volunteers, removed 2 pickup loads of trash from the river, and ate some excellent chicken, sausage, and even some venison. We hope to do another cleanup in the early fall, so stay tuned!

Here's a little of today's work on the river.
I was a little worried about today's turnout, until I talked to Mark who said he had about 40+ respond to the e-mail blast.

I arrived about 8:50am and we were already forming a second row in the parking lot.
We started getting organized under the shade of these big trees in the back corner of Rio's parking lot.....

We divided up into groups and headed out.
Maricopa, JDL, Kanz, Rio, #5, Pott's, and Lazy L&L all saw GRTU members picking up everything in sight.
I headed with Mark Dillow to JDL and picked up everything we could find. It was surprisingly clean already considering last weekend was July 4th. We managed to fill up 4 bags plus several popped tubes, umbrellas and sorted big trash. I even picked up a perfectly good snorkel and towel. I left my camera back at Rio so I don't have pics from JDL.
By the time we got back to Rio our Chefs were stoking the grills.....

Our Volunteers relaxed up the shade trees and gobbled up their lunches.
Next came the Raffle.....

I drew the names and Mark gave out 5 sightline fly fishing bracelets.
At the end of the day the pile of trash was impressive.....

All in all a very good start. Thanks to Mark Dillow for ram-rodding the effort and the 50 or so volunteers that showed up in this heat to help beautify the river we love so much.
Thanks So Much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big thanks to everyone that participated, if it weren't for the summertime family reunions and weddings that seem to have taken up every weekend of summer I would have been there. Hopefully there will be another one and I'll be there.
