What are you tying for the Guad this year?

Dave Whitlock got me thinking about Red Fox Squirrel Nymphs to imitate scuds and larger mayflies. I'm also going to tie some thread midges, RS2s, and sparkle nymphs. BTW, what the heck do trout think red sparkle nymphs are?

Disco midge works on the Guad. Size 16, 18, 20, red thread body, peacock herl head. Add a bead head if you wanna. Simple. Works.

Its always good to have a few soft hackles in the box, too.

I'm increasingly convinced that often beadhead flies are taken for eggs. The body of the fly gets ignored much like the hook does. Eggs are one of the trouts' natural foods that we can imitate almost perfectly. It's my default pattern unless I see something on the water that makes me think that fish are keying on on some other bug or aquatic critter.

I tie those red sparkle nymphs with small red wire for the body on a size 16 or 18 scud hook. They aren't that different from the disco midges. Maybe the trout think they are emerging midges.

Are there scuds as far down as Rio? What size is most common?

I usually run #20's or #22's.
