Fishing the middle Guadalupe

Post by bankerag02 » Fri Aug 21, 2015 6:02 pm

This is my first post and I am new to the whole thing so forgive me if I don't attach the pics correctly.

I moved my family to Kerrville in December and have only had a few chances to hit the river. I did fish two evenings this past week and both outings were successful. 8 small bass, 1 catfish, and a bunch of perch. I was fishing the middle Guadalupe.

Was able to go again this evening and got to explorer another crossing. Water was clear and moving fairly well in this area. Managed to catch 5 bass and a bunch of sunfish in one and half hours. One bass was pretty decent. They liked the chartreuse popper.

Nice fish, but I would like to see the bass not held like that when pictures are taken.

Yes, unfortunately many of us (including me for many years) have mishandled bass in a similar manner, potentially causing permanent damage to jaw alignment and limiting the ability of the bass to feed. There is a great deal of information on the Internet regarding the proper handling of fish, bass and trout included. Thanks to rstarnes for the reminder.

I think most of us learned the habit from watching all the redneck bass fishing shows on TV. There wasn't a bass caught that wasn't held up for the camera by the lower jaw with someone in the background chiming, "purty fish". Thankfully the word is getting out.

I agree. Thanks for the information.

Do you know if holding bass by the lower jaw but letting them hang (i.e., not turning your hand so that the fish approaches a horizontal position) is okay for the fish?

After doing some research it look to me like you can hold them by the mouth straight up and down or support their body and hold them sideways. The issue is holding them sideways and not supporting the body puts all the pressure on the jaw.
