Texas ranch tank bassin

Post by LabRat » Wed Oct 24, 2012 8:08 am

Caught this 10.1 lb (via a certified scale) largemouth Saturday on near Rockdale in a tank (that's a pond for those of you new to Texas) on a foam bass popper. Fortunately I was fishing an 8wt, so I had enough backbone in the rod for the fight, which was considerable!

Caught and released to thrill again!

Mark, you're straining yourself, but it looks like fun.

The strain was mostly on my nerves once she ran 20 yards like a redfish then tailwalked (which was when I got my first glimpse at her).
My hands shook for half an hour after I landed her.

OK, That's Officially a Bugeyed Whopper !!!!!
I miss tank fishing. I used to have a good friend with a section of land out near Bastrop. It had 4 tanks on it and 2 of them were good sized at a couple of acres. I caught many Bass there in the 5-7lb range and one time had one on about 10lb that straightened out my hook on a Dalhberg diver and got away. I'll never forget that fish jumping clear of the water in that cove and my buddy Paul hollering encouragement to me.
One of the first times I went out there we were only catching Perch so I was using a 7 1/2' 4wt Fenwick HMG. We were in a small John Boat that I was sculling over to another spot and I let my popper drag behind the boat on the way. A 5lber came up and took the popper like a Polaris Missle. On the initial strike the Bass came straight up on the popper and out of the water, head shaking all the way. It immediately ran at me, under the boat, and then started jumping on the other side. I was fighting the Bass with the rod stuck down into the water and pointed under the boat and the Bass on the other side. That little rod was doubled over at the handle. I managed to get the upper hand, walked the rod around the stern, and land that one.
My friend eventually sold that property. I sure miss fishing out there.

I think this fish saw my GRTU shirt and thought I only fished with 4wt rods, and thought she could whip me (and she came close)!
