Lower Blanco River....(around HWY 80)

Post by jchristensen77 » Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:01 am

Has anyone had any luck on this section of the Blanco? We recently moved to San Marcos, where the Blanco is litterally walking distance through the end ouf our neighborhood. When we first moved in the graffiti on the railroad trestle and the low stangnant water kind of turned me off. But now the water is back up, and Im looking to wade into the area. I know the water has cooled down, but I wont let that curtail me from hitting the neighborhood stream. Any tips on flies and presentations would be a great help!

Thanks...

i fish the blanco alot, but farther upstream in wimberley. i can't imagine the fishing being much different there. i use of streamers, buggers, and some small poppers for everything. the area i fish has some deeper pools that have a variety of fish from largemouth, smallmouth, rio grande cichlids, blue gills, catfish, and some carp.

Well since the Blanco has been dry for so long, I wouldn't guess the fishing would be too hot around that area.

I grew up upstream of where you are located. My parents still live very near the Blanco a couple of miles upstream of five mile dam.

The stretch above and below your neighborhood was totally affected by the drought...and I wonder how it affected the fish.... There are still some fish to be caught on the Blanco. Be careful with them...they have had a tough couple of summers.

Anyway, the stretch from your hood down to the Hwy 80 bridge and beyond is bream heaven. There are a couple of nice bass here and there which make fly fishing there very exciting. Hopefully, that stretch of river will have consistant flows and get healthier and healthier. Throw a little popper or a wooly buggar and you should know within the first cast or two if the fishing is any good.

Feel free to send me an email anytime for any questions you may have.

I am realizing that I need glasses to tie on the small flies. What a hoot!
Looking forward to Sunday afternoon.
