Place to Park at FM 311 Bridge?

Post by athatcher » Thu Jun 25, 2009 4:45 pm

Is there a place to park around the FM 311 Bridge? I'd like to wade/explore some of the fishing around there, but don't want my truck to magically vanish while I'm there.

I fish there often. Park on the north side of the bridge, either side of road. Plenty of room for parking but heed the signage that denotes 'where not to park'. Your car will be safe if parked in proper areas.

Comal county, Alex. FM 311 cuts to the left (Southeast) from HY 281 just north of where 281 crosses the Guad. The 311 bridge is about 3 miles SE of the 311-281 intersection. This is a popular family/teen hangout so fishing near the bridge is terrible. One must hike up or downstream a ways to get to relatively unspoiled water. Access and stream/bank hiking is easy. The water is verrrrrrrry low right now and not really worth the effort in my opinion. rob starnes

Rob,

Thanks.

I know about how low the Guad is. I fished it around Center Point last week and, although the fishing was fine, the river was as diminished as I've ever seen it. Only advantage was that I could wade through some previously too deep water to access an interesting channel.

If you go upstream from the bridge past the first set of rapids the water deepens there to about 4'-5' and there is still some good fishing to be had. I always say I am gonna go further up the river but usually don't because of my limited time and the fact that I am catching fish in the first set of rapids and the pool above them. Fished downstream two weeks ago and had a excellent day with a couple dozen bass and perch and a catfish that may not have went quite 2lbs but at least 1.5lbs. Excellent by my standards anyway.

Thank you for all the replies to my original post. I will get to the 311 bridge here soon.

I actually ended up going to the Shonto Ranch outside Kerrville on Saturday. Their water is low (just like everywhere else), but fishing was excellent. Several bass in the 2-4lb range along with a bunch of hand size perch.

I had the whole ranch to myself and didn't see another person all day long. It's a nice day if you have a few extra $$'s to spend once in a while.

watch for water mocassins on the log jams up from the bridge. I saw a huge nest of them up there a few years ago.
God Bless, Daryl
