Re: Back into the Mountains

Epilogue What can I say that would sum up this year's summer trip? This was an unusual summer with high water most places I fished. Snowpacks being 150-200% in most areas of the Rockies, then add the almost daily rains, and much of my fishing time and ability to hike/wade further from the truck was ...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Where's my Waders ? Back at the house after my first day back in Steamboat, I got a call from back home. It was my Mom, who also is my Broker. She was said things were heating up in San Antonio and she needed some help with the Real Estate business. Well I had planned to be there by next Wednesday a...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Back in Steamboat Mike had wanted me to come fish with him while he and his wife were in Steamboat. I figured I would swing through on my way back to Texas. Of course looking at the forecast was not encouraging. They still had afternoon monsoonal rains hanging over northern Colorado, but I am accust...

Re: Back into the Mountains

One More Shot I had one more day to fish in Wyoming before heading south again. I really wanted to get another day on one of my favorite Cutthroat creeks up here. Earlier on this trip I fished this creek and the skies only let me stay on the better water for about 1 1/2 hours before opening up. Over...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Another Favorite The southern Wyoming range is about as far as you can fish in a day from Afton. I have fished down there only a few times before, but it has been pretty good in the past. So time to give the eastern side of the Wyoming Range another shot. First I stopped at "Feathered Hook" to pick ...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Back to the Land of Bonnevilles First order of the day was to drive by "Feathered Hook" and see if Eric had finished tying up some of his original flys he likes to use in these waters. He had finished them and I now have 20 of his originals in 3 patterns. I could wait to try them out. I wanted to co...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Another Cutthroat Creek I didn't sleep well last night and I was very tired this morning. I tried taking a nap in the mid-morning, but that didn't work either, so it was about 1pm I decided I might as well try a local creek that has Snake River Cutthroats. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee95/jim...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Another Disappointment I was up late and consequently had trouble getting up. I swung by the Feathered Hook to ask Eric to tie me some more of his creature flys. He showed me another, his variation of a PMX. I asked him if he could tie some of those too and he said yes. I didn't really have my mind ...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Sacred Waters It's nice settling in to the Hi Country Inn here in Afton. Finally get to unload the Escape completely and organize all my flyfishing gear. I am in the land of Big Cutthroats and I need to adjust my tackle accordingly. I saw the new Fly shop in town yesterday and now on Monday I am to ...

Re: Back into the Mountains

An Old Friend..... I have been fishing around Afton long enough to know about some places that are: easy to wade and full of fish. I have been fighting; rain, lightning, high water, and a bum knee. Today I'm ready for something easy. So near Afton is a small creek with Bear Lake Bonneville Cutthroat...

Re: Back into the Mountains

North Cottonwood Creek First day in Wyoming and there's afternoon thundershowers in the forecast..... So what's New ? I decided to start easy and fish a creek on the eastern side of the Wyoming Range. I've fished this creek every year I've been up here and it is a reliable producer. You can see this...

Re: Back into the Mountains

This would be my last chance to find another stash of Cutthroats while in Steamboat. Yesterday picked at my interest in the Zirkels, so today I would give it another shot. Looking at the Elk drainage on Google maps, the North Fork of the Elk held a large meadow. There was also a forest road that par...

Re: Back into the Mountains

At Last, What I was Looking for..... I'm beginning to feel like a rainmaker. No matter where I have gone Thunderstorms have shadowed my every step. I've had some years where rain chased me out of drainages 50% of the time, but so far every day I have fished has been cut short by rain and lightning. ...
