Re: What's In Your Fly Box for Guadalupe River Trout?

With the proviso that I rarely fish dries on the Guad, I think that you should think more about fly type than specific pattern. Any fly type can be tied to match a specific bug, but different fly types have different characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. Having said that, my own preference is ...

Re: What's In Your Fly Box for Guadalupe River Trout?

Jimbo, your fly recommendations are excellent, but, to be honest, they don't come close to the exquisite recommendations made by Dorris232. I'd ask for photos of some of her stunning creations, but her descriptions are so apt, photos really couldn't add much. Guadalupe trout, you're on notice.

Re: Looking for Shade

Thanks for the report, Jimbo. Makes me wonder why I haven't fished as much this summer as I needed to. There's still time, but now I'm beginning to fantasize about trout.

What were the flies? Did you try googlng them?

Also, although rusty, my Greek is still acceptable. So, if you wish, I can translate for you.

Re: What types of flies are catching trout

Any small dark nymph will work. Much more important than pattern is drift. Are your flies going deep enough? Are you getting a good drift? In other words, presentation usually trumps pattern.

I know that ruler. It's marketed as a male ego enhancer.

Re: Asking for Advice

As you'll see if you search for "stripers," they tend to hang out in the deeper pools and bite best early in the morning or late in the evening. You might start out at Barking Dog Pool (below lease access #4). I've caught them on large streamers fished deep and retrieved with a jigging action.

Re: Asking for Advice

There's been a lot of discussion about the stripers in the river. Just search for "stripers." By catching and keeping legal stripers, you accomplish three things: you have a lot of fun, you eat fresh, albeit slightly contaminated, fish, and you save trout from ending up in a predator's gullet.

I agree. Thanks for the information.

Do you know if holding bass by the lower jaw but letting them hang (i.e., not turning your hand so that the fish approaches a horizontal position) is okay for the fish?

Re: Need Recommendation for a Good Fly Tying Book

Just take any hook, dub a nicely tapered body of dark brown fur, and then spend the rest of your time worrying about presentation. It will be time well spent.

Re: Cans in the river

I agree. Since you posted on the warmwater board, I assume that you're talking about the upper Guad. Some crossings have historically been more prone to trash than others, so people might be alerted to these so they can go there equipped with trash bags.

Re: Stocking up for this season.

Lovely flies. Lots of fish are going to have a tingly sensation in their jaws this year.

BTW, the PT tied the way Frank Sawyer tied it is my favorite small nymph (size 18 or so).
