Re: Back into the Mountains

Into the Burn Zone..... Back in 2015 Pagosa Springs and the Weminuche Wilderness had one of the worst fires this area has seen in decades. The fires lasted all summer and were not totally put out until the snows started falling. Over 100,000 acres burned and that burn area encompassed some FOASTWRN ...

Re: Back into the Mountains

The Sure Thing I am going ahead and start this one..... So first day in Pagosa and rain is predicted starting about 3pm. And this forecast was for all the mountains east, north or west. So I need 2 things; a location with a fast exit strategy and Cutthroats. After thinking about it I decided on goin...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Day 2 It's not Easy I was up early to pack up and check out of the hotel. Today I would fish another creek, this one further north and draining into the Rio Grande itself. This one too promised to hold Cutthroats, these pure Rio Grandes. Again going on the advice of friends who fish northern New Mex...

Re: Back into the Mountains

Day 1 Looking for the Pecos strain..... Everyone that knows me, knows I am a dryfly fishing fanatic. More exactly a dryfly fishing Cutthroat fanatic !!!.... Now I don't get to do much on my home waters of the Guadalupe, so when I plan my summer trips the revolve around getting some.... I've caught m...

Back into the Mountains

It's time of year again. Last summer left me with a bunch of questions about sport versus health. I had to leave early because my medications left me prone to altitude sickness. Seeing how I live for my days chasing wild Trout, I was in denial, and kept saying it would get better,... just for anothe...

Re: We need Rain !

It's all about cold water and how far downstream the flows will push it before the air temperatures warm it up. So first it's about how cold the water is to begin with. This season the water temperatures of the releases are about 60 degrees, most seasons will would see mid-50's, but that takes sever...

Re: We need Rain !

I wish Cindy would move west and get us the rain we need, but it's not looking good. The best chance for rain is Saturday and Sunday and not related to the hurricane. And I hate to say it, but reaching pool this late in June is probably not going to happen. We were real close but the lake is droppin...

Re: Terrible news - Zebra Mussels discovered in Canyon Lake

When I heard they were in Texoma years ago, I said to myself they're eventually going to be in every lake. What's worse is there is no known treatment that can combat them other than physical removal. I wonder how long before they start showing up in the river below Canyon Lake and what is that goin...

Re: We need Rain !

The upper basin on the Guadalupe is everything above Canyon Lake. So when it rains in the upper basin all that runoff has to go into Canyon Lake. And we missed significant rains in the upper basin again. The river up there is really starting to drop. It's not looking good for the lake to get to pool...

Re: We need Rain !

That was during the storm and the waves messing up the gage readings.
It's 908.92'msl and still rising ever so slightly. Next good chance for significant rain is next week.
Maybe a rogue T-Storm will develop out of the blue.

Re: We need Rain !

It getting "iffy" again. The lake is close to pool, but if the past summers are any indication, we need rain now!!! If we don't get the rain in the next week or so and get the lake to pool, it probably won't happen this summer. So say a little prayer for the right amount of rain in the upper basin. ...

Re: We need Rain !

Under certain conditions GBRA will cut the flows for weekend recreation. The lake must be below 910cfs, there must be no significant rain in the forecast. And it must be sometime after Easter but not after Labor day. There are other reasons GBRA will cut flows. Their annual inspection of the dam, re...

Re: We need Rain !

Very little rain fell in the upper basin. The river came up about 20cfs at Spring Branch. Not nearly enough to raise the lake back to pool. The lake will start dropping again simply because of evaporation as the summer heats up. We need a heavy rain over the upper basin over the next couple of weeks...

Re: White Bass

If you're going for different species and live close to Houston, you should go over to Sabine Lake and try for a Yellow Bass, true cousin to the White Bass you just caught. Good Luck !
