Re: What's In Your Fly Box for Guadalupe River Trout?

I figured I would revive this thread with some new flies and techniques that have been successful in these low flows and picky fish. First of all bead head red fox squirrel nymph is such a great pattern, I like with small rubber legs, I don't know why I didn't use them in the past. I've been using i...

Proper handling and releasing of fish (Catch and Release alive!)

I wanted to share this to non GRTU members who find themselves going through this forum. This is from Jimbo Roberts our VP of fisheries. This advice should always be followed, specially this year with the low flows and warm weather. To summarize, fish should be handled as little as possible and quic...

Re: Striped Bass -Guadalupe River Below Canyon Lake Dam

Those of you guys with some experienced chasing these guys, what size leader/tippet are you guys using. I doubt these guys are leader shy.

Since I use a sinking line I keep my leader short (4-6ft). Is a 20lbs butt section and 15lbs tippet enough in the case of hooking a big one?

Re: Striped Bass -Guadalupe River Below Canyon Lake Dam

* Lets get back to talking stripers*

With the trout season coming soon, I'll be heading to the river this weekend to try my luck at harvesting a striper or two. The fly rod record is 36lbs...Last weekend I spotted two of them that i think may be over that

Re: Help Picking Wading boots (Felt or rubber?)

I wear rubber boots and have very little problems with grip on the river. I'm sure studs would help even more but owning a raft I don't want to bother with having to remove them every time. My biggest concern with my boots were being light. I wanted boots that I could hike in, I ended up buying Pata...

Re: We need Rain !

Looks like the upper Guad is getting some good rain. Not enough to get it out of the lower flow hole it's in, but some good rain nonetheless. :) There was a slight bump in flows to around 65 but its back down again. At the very least its keeping temperatures cool. Hope those trout are finding thems...

Re: Fly Tying Hacks

I'm posting here in the hopes this thread gets going. As a novice tier I'm sure this could be very helpful. One "hack" I have is using materials found at the local grocery or arts/craft store. Many times these are a fraction of the cost of ones actually meant for fly tying. Glass beads: These can be...

Re: We need Rain !

At any rate, it's good that we'll have some holdovers. And it's great that we have Jimbo working tirelessly for the organization. He's the most important holdover. I couldn't agree more. I can only imagine all the logistics that goes into making all this happen. The fish I caught as late as J...

Suggestions for guide trip in Vancouver area.

Next week I'll be driving up to Colorado/New Mexico border to fish the Rio de Los Pinos. I'll post some pics. However what I need suggestions on is the following week I'll be in Vancouver, BC with the misses. Has anyone done a guided trip in that area? Bull trout would be a fun target, but also pink...

Re: Striped Bass -Guadalupe River Below Canyon Lake Dam

There's a good size striper in the fast water below #5. How do I know? Because I hooked a good size sunfish and it stole it! Easy meal for that guy.

Re: mentor needed

Hang in there. Last year was my first year fly fishing on the Guadalupe and I was constantly going home skunked. After a year to read, research, and learn from others I constantly have great days on the water. Not one day have I been skunked this year. On most days I catch more fish then I caught al...

Re: What's In Your Fly Box for Guadalupe River Trout?

Thank you for reviving this thread. I'm tying my own flies this season. Right now my box is well stocked with 18-20 size midges and brassies of different color and materials. I need to pick up some hooks and tie some in the 22-24 range. I also tied a range off eggs, San Juan worms, and squirmy worms...
