It's obvious why that bug is difficult to tie. Look closely, and you'll notice that Mercer actually uses a real bug, tied on with 12/0, then just ties on a couple beads and a little dubbing above it.

Whitlock's Guide To Aquatic Trout Foods isn't really a tying book but it's a great entomology book with some simple ties in it and good advice. This is a good precurser to tying flies because you understand the intricate anatomy of the bugs better.

Dave Hughes Essential Trout Flies is great.

I've seen Mick's tying area and I believe he took out a second mortgage for it. What you don't see is he has his own kitchen in there so he never has to leave! If you have the pedestal stand for that HMH you can tie anywhere! I tied a bunch of #20 bwo thorax's on the way from Missoula to Bozeman one...
