Re: Best spots for carp?

I got into some yesterday on the north side of Shaw Island out on Buchanan. I was out looking for stripers, but the wind picked up more than it was forecast, so we went carp hunting instead. Where we found soft or sandy bottoms they were there. No tailers, all cruisers and very skiddish (more than n...

Re: Best spots for carp?

I've heard and seen many pics, but are those carp deep, or cruising the shallows, eating and tailing? Shallow water carp on the fly is the cheapest alternative to bones and permit that you can get.

Best spots for carp?

Anyone have any recommendations for carp based on the current conditions? I had a few spots on Buchanan that now are totally dry and the water is very stained, so I am curious to know if anyone else has seen them piled up on the shore.

Re: White Bass Spawn

all 12-inch and better white bass are honkin fly rod fare. Also great to fillet, because you can't damage their population . ??? Do some searching on white bass stunt, or population stunting. The limits put in place help keep the population healthy - without them, they would overbreed, creating a l...

Re: Fly Fishing Tournament for Bass

I noticed an interesting guideline in the rules of the tournament: 7. TACKLE AND EQUIPMENT: All fish must be caught in a legal sporting manner. Trolling with combustion engine as a method of fishing is prohibited. ONLY RODS AND REELS, LINE AND FLIES DESIGNED EXCLUSIVELY FOR FLY FISHING MAY BE USED. ...

Re: White Bass Spawn

Thanks fellas. I just picked up a new 4-wt rig (giggidy) that I'm going to put a sinking line on. I'm going to bring my 5-wt with floating line along as well considering how many I saw rising last Friday. Whites usually run shallow enough at spawn time that you don't need to get super deep. I sugge...

Re: Tippet sizes for bass, sunfish, and other non-trout?

I pretty much run flouro on everything, except when fishing anything meant on top of the water. Even poppers will work fine with flouro and I usually wont' change up just for that. For bass, I run full sink heads, 15' in length, with 6' flouro leaders. 10 - 12 lb on the 6 wt, 12 - 15 lb on the 8 wt,...

Re: Alleged Record Breakage

I looked up the fly rod records for stripers, whites and blacks on Travis and Buchanan. I couldn't believe what I saw - I don't even consider catching those a good day! Shoot, just the other day I could have had one of each at Buch. Then of course, there is this one I got at Travis: http://lh6.ggpht...

Re: Looking to buy a new rod. Help?

I picked up a Ross Flystik from Chris at Living Waters and plan on doing some field testing this weekend. I'll post my thoughts sometime next week. From the practice casting in his parking lot it threw line with ease - I didn't even use an effort to throw 60' of line. Of course, I'll have to full si...

Re: Looking to buy a new rod. Help?

Thanks Jimbo, I'll look at Teeny. For stripers, I am sometimes getting 20' deep, so a full sink of at least type 4 is needed.

Re: Looking to buy a new rod. Help?

If you liked the Sage Smallmouth, I would recommend giving the Ross Flystik a whirl in a 6 wt. I've casted both, and definitely prefer the Ross more. It's also half the price :D . Best of luck with whatever you decide. My Flystik is easily one of my favorite rods. I'll have to give that one a try, ...

Re: Looking to buy a new rod. Help?

Most of the bass rods are 8 weights not because of the fight of the fish, but the size of the fly and to have it turn over correctly. Now the 8 is good for blacks and stripers, but a 6 is good for guads, smalls and whites since you throw smaller flies. Whites on a 4 are a blast if the conditions are...
