Re: Swimming BWO
One of my faves. Also a go-to fly for our late president and guide Bill Higdon. When nothing else worked, he'd tie one of these on for his clients, with frequent success.

Re: Some recent flies
Beware of members on this Board offering to "test" your newly tied flies. They are often shiftless characters and not to be trusted!
P.S. Nice flies, Russell!

Re: Quiet board, time to post some pics
Very nice flies and photos. Those flies will work well on the Guad. Use either one as a lead fly and add a small, dark midge behind and fish the dark green water.

Ray, You may also want to check the websites of prominent fly shops, like Orvis, Feather-Craft, Bob Marriott's, or The Fly Shop (based in Redding, CA). Since they sell a large variety of flies, they'll often have really good pictures of each one they sell, and will sometimes (for Orvis and The Fly S...

Small, dark nymphs on light tippets. Thread midges, RS2s, WD40s, Ron McAlpin's BWO Swimming Nymph is always one of my favorites.

Re: Home Water
Thanks, Ron. You know my weaknesses. Turns out I have a three piece version of that rod, made by Rob Hoffhines of Chicago. And I just picked up a couple of custom rods Malcolm Duke (Lyons Rod Co, Bradford protege) built for me (7.5 ft, 2 pc, 2 tip, 5 wt, based on a Bradford/Payne M.101 taper), so my...

I'm not familiar with the Leonard taper, but have a Mike Brooks version of the Young Driggs River that is my favorite bamboo rod. He made it with two tips, a 4/5 and a 5/6, so he calls it a 4/5/6. There is a noticeable difference in how the two cast, but my favorite is the 4/5 with a 5 wt line.

Re: Peacock bass?
I caught them fishing in the urban canals around Miami last March, along with four other exotic species I'd never caught before. They all fell to my chartreuse and white Foxy Clouser tied with Arctic fox and with pearl diamond braid wrapped around the shank of the hook. The fly was less important th...

Re: Scud back material?
My favorite scud back material is an old Orvis product called "Shimmer Skin." Not sure they still sell it, but I have great luck with it. It has a mottled texture and iridescence not found in other scud back material.

Re: What's In Your Fly Box for Guadalupe River Trout?
I was in our local Cabela's today and was amused to see that grizzly hackle capes, saddles and necks are still not showing up on their tying materials racks. In fact, I'm not sure they've had them during the entire time this store has been open. Glad I have a decent supply at home. They're great for...

Re: Fished my bamboo rod today
I just remember how cold we all were that morning. I was glad I was the one with the camera in my hand and not standing in the water.
